The French Connection
Strong Market Opportunities in French Caribbean islands
Barbadian exporters eager to launch out into the European Union (EU) market might find success even closer to home through the French Connection, that is, the French Caribbean islands of Martinique and Guadeloupe.
A recent market research mission undertaken by the BIDC to these markets has revealed considerable interest in select Barbadian goods. And should the possibility of having to say the phrase "Parlez-vous Anglais" seem a little frightening, it shouldn't since both territories are very accessible to English-speaking visitors and traders looking to do business there.
Coming out of the research the BIDC has compiled two reports to offer key insights into these territories and to highlight areas of opportunity for exporters eager to launch into these relatively untapped markets. As French overseas territories, both Martinique and Guadeloupe could serve as a platform from which prospective traders could tap into the wider EU market. It is also a good first base to test the EU market entry since these territories are governed by EU laws.
According to the research findings, there is considerable interest in Barbadian biscuits, juices, soya bean oil, condiments and sauces, rum cake, T-shirts and polo shirts, commercial uniforms, swimwear, solar water heaters, decorative paints and prefabricated metal structures. To capitalize on the interest shown the BIDC will be undertaking a trade mission to Martinique and Guadeloupe before year-end. Persons interested in participating in the mission should contact the Research or Export Promotion divisions of the BIDC or their Business Development Officer.
About the Studies
The comprehensive reports cover market requirements, distribution channels, market access and contacts/ suppliers in the markets. The recommendations contained in the reports will assist producers in making strategic decisions in relation to these markets, for example; is this a market for my company to explore? Do I need to modify my product to penetrate this market successfully? Who are the suppliers? How can my product be supplied and how can it be promoted within the market?Friday, August 27, 2010
